Gasoline Alley Coffee – 24 East 23rd Street
Rated by Forbes as making the best espresso in the city, Gasoline Alley uses beans from Intelligentsia – but they brew with a special roast that’s lighter, meaning each cup has less acidity, but more caffeine. They also serve donuts by Dough, so if you’re in search of the perfect breakfast pairing, look no further than a large black coffee and a glazed poppy seed donut.
Black Press Coffee – 100 Lexington Avenue
Black Press serves flat-out amazing coffee in a well-lit, midcentury industrialist space. The music is light; the Wi-Fi is speedy; and there’s great window seating, perfect for NYC people-watching. The courteous staff make fabulous coffee with beans from Parlor, considered one of the very best roasters in the city. For something a little different, try a Cortado or a Flat White; pair with one of their absurdly tasty pastries, like a blueberry cornflake muffin.
Gregory’s – 327 Park Avenue South
There may be more than a few Gregory’s Coffee spots in the city, but that’s simply because New Yorkers can’t get enough of what might be the best coffee in the city. Gregory’s features a rotating selection of single-origin (read: delicious) beans. Their baristas are incredibly knowledgeable about what they’re brewing, so don’t hesitate to ask for tasting notes, or geek out about growing regions. When you stop in, be sure to try one of their nut-seed espresso balls; they’re decadent, protein-packed, and a great breakfast on the go.
Birch Coffee – 21 East 27th Street
This supremely laid-back coffee shop has a superb staff, and some serious drip coffee; their house blend features notes of cocoa and nuts, with a balanced, smooth finish. And if you’re in the mood for something other than coffee, Birch also serves high-quality loose-leaf teas. Leave your laptop at home, as there is no Wi-Fi, but that makes it an even better place to chat, meet someone, or do a little writing.
